CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Vlad Pav was often called the hero of ice by his allies, and the northern hound by his enemies. Amongst the tribes of the north, he was one of the greatest followers of Horthum, the northern chief who became a god. Whilst he was not associated with any jarl, his name alone carried a weight equivalent to one. As far as appearances were concerned, he was not particularly impressive compared to his fellow countrymen, “merely” reaching a height of a hundred and eighty-six centimeters. With square shoulders, trained muscles, and a wide torso, he was almost the picture-perfect description of a northern warrior. The only thing that belied his age were the faint wrinkles below his eyes, and a wide forehead that was made even more prominent thanks to a receding hairline.

His eyes, however, stood out amongst all his other features. Small but piercing icy blue eyes that could send chills down a man’s spine. Though he was already in his late fifties, he was still regarded as a dangerous combatant, a cruel but efficient tactician, and a narcissist who viewed himself second only to his god. This was the man who served the Horthum, the Ascended god of ice and snow.

“Any news?” Vlad said, his voice not quite low enough to classify as a baritone, but as firm as iron. His cold eyes glanced at the tall man beside him, a giant that towered nearly thirty centimeters over him, though his frame was on the narrow side for his height. His messy, long hair fell over the left side of his face, hiding a long scar. To add to his intimidating appearance, his clothing was made of elk hide and other animal furs, which protected him from the icy winds that blew past him.

“Nothing to report from the teams in the west yet,” the man replied.

“Hmm,” Vlad said thoughtfully, closing his eyes for a moment as he considered his options. He and his subordinates had been trekking to the west for months now, searching for the desire of his god. The search had been mostly fruitless, and had it not been for Horthum directly communicating with him once in a while to provide some sort of guidance, he would have called off the search himself. But as the chosen one of his god, it was both his honor and duty to obey his divine master. “What about the other matter?”

“Acacius and his kin seem to be heading west, still,” the tall man said. “Spotted near the free city of Atla. No more is known.”

Vlad frowned, narrowing his eyes. “What a pity. It seems that the church of the Ascended has really lost their touch gathering information. This prolonged search is displeasing to Lord Horthum.”

“Mhh,” the tall man grunted in agreement. He looked back and saw their eight companions. Every single one of them had a one-handed beard axe as a side weapon strapped to their belt, though their main weapons differed. Leather and furs were their attire of choice, with amulets and trinkets of power supplementing their equipment.
